B3 Competitions Return To Louisville
April 20-22, 2001 After an extremely successful
B3 last year in Louisville (the three-day event welcomed 94,000 spectators
and 200 of the world’s best alternative sport athletes), ESPN has chosen the
city again as a site for their B3 competition. The Kentucky Derby Festival
in Louisville, KY will host this year’s B3 competition April 20-22, 2000.
Athletes will have the chance to qualify for the 2001 X Games in San Francisco,
CA at two B3 events this year. “With the enthusiasm and progression of extreme
sports, ESPN is excited and honored to be returning for the third year as
part of the extraordinary festivities in conjunction with Thunder Over Louisville.”
said ESPN Linda Moore, Director of Auxiliary Events. Says Kentucky Derby Festival
President and CEO, Michael E. Berry, “We are extremely flattered to be hosting
this extreme sports competition for an unprecedented third year. The community
and the Derby Festival are thrilled to add bikes, boards and blades to our
traditional B3’s — balloons, boats and bands.” The B3 competition will feature
more than 250 athletes from around the world, competing in aggressive in-line
skating, skateboarding and bicycle stunt for medals, cash prizes and an open
bid to the invitation-only X Games. All of the competitions will be held at
a new location in Phase II of Waterfront Park. There are three sport categories
with a total of nine disciplines, including bicycle stunt street, halfpipe
and flatland; men’s and women’s in-line skating, street and halfpipe; skateboarding,
street and halfpipe. Expect the best-of-the-best to compete at Louisville’s
Waterfront Park April 20-22. Spectator admission to the competition is free.
Schedules will be announced in the April issue of Extremz, along with pertinent
information on each of the events. ESPN and ESPN 2 will combine to televise
the event. Philadelphia, PA will host the X Games Summer 2001. Extremz is
excited to be working again with ESPN to bring you the latest details and
schedules for the 2001 B3 event.
