Gauley Season

Wet, Wild & Wonderful

Publication Date: October 1999

A breathtakingly beautiful, remote, rugged canyon with towering sandstone cliffs and steep slopes of brilliant fall foliage provides the backdrop for the Gauley, an amazingly powerful river that's ranked #7 in the world's top 10. The only other North American river ranked in the world's top is the section of the Colorado that runs through the Grand Canyon.

On selected dates in September and October, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers releases an incredible volume of water from Summersville Dam. The water gushes out with earth shattering force to create awesome whitewater that attracts paddlers from all over the world. Characterized by a steep gradient and tough, technical runs, this river has it all: powerful water, steep drops, mammoth holes, colossal waves, and turbulent chutes. This is world-class whitewater at its best!

The Lower section, with Class II-V rapids, is fun and exciting. The impressive setting, great rapids, and huge wavetrains provide an unforgettable experience. Similar in character to the Upper, but not as tight or technical, this section is a favorite of veteran paddlers but still suitable for adventurous beginners. It's also a great warm-up for the Upper section.

The Upper section has several Class V + rapids along with numerous others rated IV and V. The rapids are continuous and require concentration and skill. Steep, turbulent drops and rocky, technical routes demand constant maneuvering. This is not a section for novices. If you're an experienced rafter looking for a real whitewater challenge, the Upper Gauley River is the trip for you this fall. It's an experience you won't forget!
